Back in 2009, my husband and I were searching for answers. Darren had suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was 20 years old on a job site and now in his 30s, he was having increasing body pain that went beyond the headaches and back problems we were used to.
We became the squeaky wheel insisting that more was going on until finally a rheumatologist gave it a name – fibromyalgia. I remember being relieved, at least it was not arthritis. But as the years have passed I have realized that Fibro, Chronic or Intractable Pain disorders come with their own set of unique challenges.
To date, I have not met one person with chronic pain that has not had someone in the medical field call them hysterical. Not to mention the struggle to explain their conditions to family and friends. Chronic pain is insidious for its ability to attack your body, your brain so you doubt yourself and your support system when they doubt you or you believe they doubt you. There is a seemingly endless maze of treatments and medications to navigate while you are dealing with symptoms and side effects. No wonder chronic pain patients feel crazy!
We chose Moving Towards Better as our battle cry in those early years because we realized that Darren’s chronic pain and how we dealt with it was a choice. The treatments, the medications, the drs, and what we allowed were a choice. We chose to always continue Moving Towards Better.
We cannot wait to build connection and community for chronic pain patients and their friends and families. We welcome all patients, supporters, caregivers, alternative therapies, and traditional health practitioners to join us Moving Towards Better!
